Introduction

This tutorial shows the differences between the picoScan150 Core software settings compared to a TiMxxx. In this case, we compare a picoScan150 Core and a TiM781. However, the information also applies to most other picoScan150 and TiM4/5/7 variants with the latest firmware. We'll go through different settings as in a real customer setting.

The goal is to:

  • login as Service
  • use CoLa B
  • use 15Hz of scanning frequency and 0.33° of angular resolution
  • limit the device to a field of view of 180° forward facing
  • only use the first echo
  • set filter
  • output distance and RSSI data
  • output the data in LMDscandata format

TiM781

picoScan150

The default passwords are identical.

Differences

While Service is available with default settings the other user levels need to be activated before they can be used.

CoLa B

TiM781

(Find the setting: Parameter --> Network / Interface / I/O)

-->

picoScan150

(Find the setting: Diagnostics --> Cybersecurity --> legacy protocols)

CoLa-ASCII: Port 2111
CoLa-Binary: Port 2112

Differences

For the TiMxxx, the default ports (2111 and 2112) are always set to Cola A. For the picoScan150 these are different and can not be changed.

Scanning frequency and angular resolution

TiM781

The TIM uses 15 Hz of scanning frequency and 0.33 ° of angular resolution as a default setting. This is not changeable.

picoScan150

The picoScan150 uses 15Hz of scanning frequency and 0.33°/1° of angular resolution as a default setting. This is changeable.

(Find the setting: Configuration --> Basic settings --> Basic settings --> Scan configuration)

Field of view

TiM781

(Find the setting: Parameter --> Data processing --> Output data range)

picoScan150

(Find the setting: Application--> Data output --> Angle range filter)

Differences

  • As the coordinate system changed, you need to set different values to reach the same result with the picoScan150. The LMDscandata output format of the picoScan still uses the TiMs convention (-48° to 228°).
  • For the picoScan150 the filter needs to be activated, this was not necessary with the TiMxxx.

First echo only

TiM781

-

picoScan150

(Find the setting: Configuration --> Basic settings --> Filter --> Echo filter)

Differences

The TiM781 does not have multi-echo technology. Hence, there is only one echo. To have the same behavior with the picoScan150 you need to activate the Echo filter and set it to either first or second echo. Otherwise, you get a lot more output data.

LMDscandata output

TiM781

The TiM always outputs the distance data by default. The RSSI data, the device name and the timestamp can be activated if needed.

The TiM always outputs the data by default.

picoScan150

The default format is Compact. Therefore you need to set it to LMDscandata.

The picoScan150 outputs the RSSI data by default and can not be deactivated. The picoScan150 does not output the device name and this timestamp

However, it outputs "Time since start-up in us" and "Time since transmission in us" at the corresponding position.

Differences

  • The default format is Compact. Therefore you need to set it to LMDscandata.
  • The picoScan150 has a larger field of view. Therefore, there are an additional 54 bytes (18 beams * (2 bytes per distance value + 1 byte RSSI value))
  • Only for picoScan150 PRO: Due to the higher measurement range, distance values can reach up to 65m (65535 mm). With range extension mode the maximum distance is 120m and the scale factor in LMDscandata is set to 2 (maximum value in telegram: 65655)
  • The picoScan150 does not output the device name and the timestamp. If you activate these options in the TiM the output telegram gets longer and therefore the byte difference between picoScan150 and TiM gets less than 54 bytes.
