Challenge:

  • Presence detection of pencil box
  • presence detection of the pens (are all pens in the box? Do they have the right place regarding the color?)
  • Is one / more colors in the same box?

Solution: color sensor CSM-WP117A2P 1067294 with IO-Link.

How to teach:

Since we need more than one output, we have to teach the device via I / O-Link. In my case, I did this with our parameterization software  SOPAS ET.
Here we have a total of 8 outputs available.
My first output should tell us if the box is present. The others should give us the colors black, yellow, pink and blue.
We put the pen box under the CSM (distance to the pins is 12.5mm).
Now we take the box away and teach on the background. After that, I teach every color (pens are in the box at this step).

As we can see below, every pen is getting detected reliable.

Q1: Box (output LED on the sensor)
Q2: Black
Q3: Yellow
Q4: Pink
Q5: Blue

Even if one pen is missing, we do not lose the Signal of the transparent Box material.

Since we have I/O-Link, we are now able to evaluate every output signal in a PLC.
For example we can check if the pens are in the right order or if every colored pen is in the box.
For such a application, the color sensor CSM is a one-fits-all solution.
