Spot Size Computation
The spot size of LRS4000 is different for standard operation mode and extended range mode. Since the operation mode can be changed during a measurement, the operator needs to be aware of the effect.
Where as the spot size of the standard mode is known for its small size, the spot size of the extended range mode can be compared with the spot size of the LD-LRS.
You can find a detailed example in chapter 3.4.5 of the operation manual available at sick.com
NOTE:
The calculation of the minimum objet sizes in the extended range mode is based on worst case conditions. In 80m distance and only 10% remission, we have to hit the target with the full spot. Than we will measure the target with at least 98% detection propability. As always, SICK is overly secure here, so that the values in the data sheet are valid at all times and under all conditions. In the real world, it strongly depends on the application. In distances nearer 80m the object size could be less than 4.2 mrad. When measuring on targets with more than 10% remission, the object size can be less than 4.2 mrad. When the detection propability can be little less than 98%, the object size can also be less than 4.2 mrad.
Many competitors are not as conservative, making direct data sheet comparisons less suitable. Due to the diverse configuration options of the LRS4000 and its ability to switch between normal mode and extended range, we recommend testing the device's detection capabilities. The extended range mode is also capable of detecting objects smaller than the spot size, albeit with a reduced detection probability.
Standard mode [40m@10%]
Spot Height
2.6 mrad * distance + 7 mm = spot height
Spot Width
(0.4 mrad + 0.698 mrad) * distance + 7°mm
Min Object Size
Internal Divergence * distance = Min Object Size
Internal Divergence standard mode = 2.6 mrad
Extended range mode [80m@10%]
Spot Height
2.6 mrad * distance + 7 mm = spot height
Spot Width
(0,4 mrad + 4.189 mrad) * distance + 7°mm = spot size 12.5Hz with range extension mode (0,4 mrad + 8.378 mrad) * distance + 7 mm = spot size 25Hz with range extension mode
Min Object Size
Internal Divergence * distance = Min Object Size
Internal Divergence 12.5Hz with range extension mode = 0,240 ° = 4.189 mrad Internal Divergence 25Hz with range extension mode = 0,480 ° = 8.378 mrad
