Sometimes, there is the need of an encoder with parallel interface. If an ARS60 can't be used because another resolution or a multiturn encoder is needed then the interface converter box IP210 from Motrona is the solution (The IP251 was the old interface converter box which has been phased-out).

With this converter box it is possible to convert the SSI interface of an encoder into the parallel interface.

What is needed?

  • interface converter box IP210 from Motrona
  • mini USB-B to USB-A cable → USB cable from IOLA2US-01101 (SiLink2 Master) can be used
  • two independent 10...30VDC power supplies
  • Operator Software OS 10.0
  • PC/Notebook
  • SSI encoder for example AFM60
  • D-SUB25 cable for output signals

How to setup?

How to wire the interface converter box IP210?

There are two ways how to wire the input of the encoder:

  • MASTER MODE: The Motrona converter box is connected with the SSI encoder. The converter box is the master and the encoder the slave.
  • SLAVE MODE:  The Motrona converter box is connected with the SSI encoder. Parallel to this connection is another conjunction to a SSI Master (PLC).

How to parameterize the IP210 via the OS10.0?

The following picture shows an overview of the OS10.0 when connecting an encoder to the converter box and starting the software.

The list of parameter and the simple monitor are the most important for programming.

The list of parameter

1) Take the desired SSI encoder and wire it to the converter box. Connect the converter box with the PC and start the software. If the message on the left buttom corner looks like the following picture then there is a successful connection and the parameterization is possible.

2) In order to change a parameter the follwing row has to be followed.

To save all the changed parameters, easily press the button "Transmit Change". To store the parameters in the EEProm of the connected encoder then press the button "Store EEProm".

If you want to save the settings in a file press the button "Unit Save As". This is useful to copy the settings to other encoders or to have a back-up.

3) In this example the AFM60A-S4AC008192/1037775 has been used. The following pictures show the parameters that have to be changed.

The simple monitor

The simple monitor can be used to visualize different variables after the change of parameters.

Press the button "ZP210:Monitor".

In the window of the simple monitor the ZP210 Monitor will show up.

In the page list you can select the variables that you want to monitor by pressing the button "Editing".

The selected variables then have a green checkmark and also show up on the right side. Here you can also change the display format by clicking on it.

With the button "Start" the monitoring will start.

In the list of inputs it is now possible to reset or set some variables. E.g. you can perform a "SSI Zero Position" by double clicking the white box in the column "Serial".

If you want to stop the monitoring simply press the button "Stop".
