Introduction

The detection of packaging units, e.g., on a conveyor belt, is a common application.
However, the task becomes much more difficult when packaging units are transported end to end.

In the past, such applications were usually solved with the help of the SICK DeltaPac sensor (discontinued since December 2023).

Another available solution is to use the Edge-Height-Jump feature of the OD2000 sensor.
Following videos will guide you through how to set up the OD2000 Edge-Height-Jump feature and how to replace the SICK DeltaPac sensor with the OD2000.

How the Edge-Height-Jump feature works in detail

This video shows you how the OD2000 Edge-Height-Jump function works in detail.

Tips for a mechanical replacement of the DeltaPac sensor

This video will show you what to consider mechanically when replacing a DeltaPac sensor with the OD2000.

Parametrization of the OD2000

This video will show you how to parametrize the OD2000 for an Edge-Height-Jump function task using the SICK parametrization software SOPAS.

Special variant OD2000-0301T15S02

A very common application is counting small boxes on a conveyor belt (conveyor speed 10..300 mm/s).
For these kind of applications an OD2000 special variant is available:

OD2000-0301T15S02 (Article No 6087794 )

The sensor is set up so Q1 checks whether an object is within the sensors detection range. Q2 is providing an impulse signal if the edge of a package is detected.

Settings of the OD2000-0301T15S02 variant
Cycle time = 200 µs

Average filter = Off

Median filter = Off

Q1 Mode = Single point teach

Q1 SP1 switching point = 5 mm

Q1 Timer mode = Switch-off delay

Q1 Timer setup = 50 ms

Q2 Mode = Edge height jump
Q2 Cycle offset = 20

Q2 Min. height jump = 0.2 mm (depending on the surface structure of the boxes 0.3 mm or higher can be suitable as well)

Q2 Max. height jump = 1 mm (depending on the edge shape of the boxes even higher values can be suitable as well)

Q2 Hysteresis = 0 mm

Q2 Jump direction = Negative

Q2 Timer mode = Switch-off delay

Q2 Timer setup = 80 ms

Please note that these settings may need to be adjusted to suit the specific application conditions.

Example videos

This video provides an overview of how you can monitor the OD2000 measurement results as well as the switching output using an oscilloscope. You will see how the OD2000 can handle even difficult surfaces, but also how you can identify the cause of application-related issues.
