General

What is the meaning of the gray scale for contrast sensors?

The grayscale resolution is an important performance feature for contrast sensors.

The number of "gray-steps" indicates how many shades of gray the specific sensor type can distinguish between black and white.

Example for a 25-step gray-scale

Condition:

  1. Contrast sensor with teach-in:
The minimum contrast step with successful teach-in result.
  2. Contrast Sensor with potentiometer setting:
The minimum contrast step which can be adjusted using the sensors potentiometer.

Here you can find an overview of performance classes of commercially available contrast sensors:

Number of gray steps Performance Level
< 10 restricted for high contrast print mark detection
10…20 enough for most standard print mark applications with sufficient contrast
> 20…30 standard performance for most contrast sensors
> 30 good for challenging low contrast applications
> 50 high performance contrast sensor for special demand applications
