Why does the MLG-2 WebChecker lose the object edge?

The MLG-2 WebChecker may lose the object edge if the object is positioned too far outside the optimal operating range.

The MLG-2 WebChecker is designed to operate within a specified optimal measurement range between the transmitter and receiver. If the object is positioned too far outside this optimal distance range, the received light beams can no longer be correctly assigned to an edge at the receiver (simplified explanation). As a result, reliable edge detection may no longer be possible.

The following situations can occur:

  • Object positioned closer to the receiver:
    ​If the material remains approximately centered within the light field but is shifted closer to the receiver, the system can typically still detect and measure the edge, even up to a position directly in front of the receiver. However, measurement accuracy will be significantly reduced.
  • Object positioned closer to the transmitter:
    ​If the material is moved further toward the transmitter side, the beam assignment becomes increasingly difficult. Beyond a certain point, the system can no longer reliably identify the edge, causing the edge position to be lost and preventing a valid measurement.


To ensure stable edge detection and the highest measurement accuracy, the material should be positioned within the specified optimal operating range of the MLG-2 WebChecker.
