Why is the serial number, at a Hiperface / Hiperface DSL encoder, on the type label different to the serial number stored in the EEprom?

There is a difference, at Hiperface / Hiperface DSL encoders at the serial number. You have a serial number on the type label and a serial number stored in

How does the serial number look like?

The serial number of the encoder is build up like this:

  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
the serial number on the electronic type label Y M W W z z z z p
the serial number on the type label on the encoder y y W W z z z z p

The electronic serial number can be read out with the command "56h"

The difference is in the 1st and the 2nd letter.

  • the serial number in the EEprom shows, in the 1st letter, the year in 1 alphabetic character, e.g. Y, Z, A, B, ...
    additionally, the month is shown, in the 2nd letter, as HEX digit, e.g.: 1, 2, 3, ..., A, B, C
  • the serial number of the type label shows the year in 2 letters directly, e.g.: 22, 23, 24, 25, ...

The meaning of the characters:

Letter Meaning
Y

year as a alphabetic character (see explanation below)

--> used at the electronic serial number

y

year as number (21 = 2021)

--> used at the type label

M month as a HEX letter (1 = January; A = October; C = December)
--> used at the electronic serial number
W calendar week

What is the reason for this difference?

The formatting of the serial number (electronic version and type label version) was defined when Hiperface was introduced by the Max Stegmann GmbH in the year 1996.

Since 2002, the Max Stegmann GmbH is part of the SICK AG. This was the reason why the serial number on the type label was changed to the SICK standard.

Due to the fact, that customer systems were used to the old Stegmann format, we decided to keep the format in the electronic serial number.

At Hiperface DSL, we decided to use the same format as at Hiperface.
