The EG34x was in that way designed to use it in combination with an encoder.
The attached instruction shows how to mount an encoder with face mount flange onto an EG34x. In this case the EG341-81B001012058 (1033489) and the AFM60A-S4NB018x12 (1059039) have been used.
Of course other encoders with face mount flange can also be used.
This manual shows how to mount a AFx60x-S4xxxxxxxx encoder onto the EG341-81B001012058 limit switch gearbox (1033489). An AFx60x-S4xxxxxxxx encoder has a solid shaft of 10 mm x 19 mm and a face mount flange. Here, the shaft of the encoder is connected to the shaft of the limit switch gearbox by means of a claw coupling.
This mounting process requires some products from the SICK homepage which can be found in the table below. The picture below also shows the products from left to right: the limit switch gearbox, the adaptor kit and the encoder.

Mounting Instruction STEP by STEP
Please follow the mounting instruction step by step in order to mount the encoder to the limit switch gearbox correctly!
STEP 1
Take the flange adaptor from the adaptor kit and put the O-ring into the groove.
STEP 2
Place the encoder on top of the flange adaptor so that the face mount flange sits in the hole of the flange adaptor.
STEP 3
Turn the encoder until you can see the tapped holes from the encoder. Put the lock washers onto the M4*10mm screws, place the screws into the tapped holes and tighten those screws using an allen key size 3mm (with a T-handle).
STEP 4
Remove the cover from the limit switch gearbox looseing the hexagon bolt with a 10mm open end wrench and/or a slotted screwdriver.
STEP 5
Loosen und remove the four M4 cylinder head screws using an allen key size 3mm. If the screws are too tight, you can also use an allen key size 3mm with a T-handle.
STEP 6
The claw coupling consists of three parts:
coupling half for mounting onto shaft of the encoder (10 mm diameter)
coupling star (blue part)
coupling half for mounting onto shaft of the limit switch gearbox (6 mm diameter)
At first separate the coupling half for mounting on the shaft of the limit switch gearbox from the claw coupling like it is shown in the picture. Take this coupling half and place it onto the shaft of the limit switch gearbox. Make sure that the coupling half sits all the way down on the gear wheel.
STEP 7
Now lift up the upper housing of the limit switch gearbox (1), turn the coupling half (2) until you can see the first grub screw of the coupling half (3) and tighten the grub screw with an allen key size 2 mm (4). Repeat this operation for the second grub screw of the coupling half.
STEP 8
If the two grub screws are tight, reassemble the limit switch gearbox. Make sure that the O-ring sits on the flange of the upper housing correctly (1) (2). Also align the upper housing so that the plug is on the left side from the type label (3). After that place the four M4 screws into the tapped holes and tighten them using an allen key size 3 mm with a T-handle.
STEP 9
After reassembling the limit switch gearbox take a caliper and set it to 8 mm. Place the caliper on the front edge of the shaft and mark the 8 mm with a line using a fine pe.
STEP 10
In the next step the other coupling half with the coupling star on it is getting mounted onto the shaft of the encoder. Place and align the coupling half onto the shaft so that the front edge of the coupling half meets the previously marked line and one of the grub screws is orthogonal to the flat surface of the encoder shaft. Afterwards tighten the two grub screws of the coupling half
STEP 11
In the last step the encoder is getting mounted onto the limit switch gearbox. Therefore, the coupling half of the encoder needs to be aligned to the coupling half of the limit switch gearbox so that both coupling halves mesh together (1) (do this with fine feeling and NOT with a lot of power!). After the successful assembly the flange of the adaptor will be on top of the O-ring of the upper housing from the limit switch gearbox (2). Now take the clamp from step 4) and put it around the flange adaptor and the limit switch gearbox (3). In order to seal the mechanical connection between flange adaptor and the limit switch gearbox and furthermore to create a fixed connection between those two parts, tighten the hexagon bolt (4).
STEP 12
The mounting process is now done.
