Fibers with a glass core can be operated with both red light and infrared light amplifiers.
The use of plastic fibers in combination with an infrared light amplifier does not work.
The reason for this is that plastic cannot well transmit infrared light and the amplifier does not receive a light signal. The received digits are close to 0 even at maximum transmission power and response time.
