Has the hardware design of the PGT-08-S/1036616 changed?

The PGT-08-S/1036616 is used to connect programmable incremental encoders, absolute encoders or safety encoders to the PC and program them via the Engineering Tool SOPAS or the Safety Designer.

Due to a phased-out component, a change in the hardware design has recently been implemented in the PGT-08-S.

From the outside, you can't tell that there is a difference between the new and the old PGT.

The difference is inside the PGTs, namely on the circuit board.

The curcuit board from the PGTs with the old hardware design has two ICs/chips.

  • One chip is responsible for passing through the power supply.
  • The other chip makes communication between SOPAS ET/Safety Designer and the PGT/connected encoder possible.

When connecting the PGT with the old hardware design to the PC and opening the device manager, the two chips become visible via the two COM-Ports.

Due to the phase-out of the old chips, a new component had to be selected and implemented.

A chip was chosen that now handles both tasks, the power supply and the communication, at the same time, whereas before two chips were needed.


That is why the curcuit board from the PGTs with the new hardware design now has only one IC/chip now.

When connecting the PGT with the new hardware design to the PC and opening the device manager, only one COM-Port is visible representing the one chip.

What points need to be considered before operating the PGT-08-S?

Please note the following points:

  • PGTs with a datecode from 26/32 or newer do have the new hardware design and are ONLY compatible with the
    ​latest SOPAS ET/Safety Designer version 2026.1, in which the driver for the new chip has been successfully implemented and tested.
  • PGTs with a datecode 26/30 or older do have the old hardware design and also work with older versions of SOPAS ET/Safety Designer. Anyways please always make sure to use the latest version!
